Uppgifter i patientjournalen som har registrerats hos en vårdenhet, till exempel ett sjukhus, får inte göras tillgänglig genom elektronisk åtkomst för en annan vårdenhet, till exempel ett annat sjukhus inom samma vårdgivare, om patienten motsätter sig detta. Uppgifterna ska då spärras i den elektroniska journalen. Ospärrade patientuppgifter får läsas från annan vårdenhet än där de har registrerats, endast efter att patienten har gett sitt samtycke. Undantaget är så kallad nödåtkomst, som innebär att det föreligger fara för patientens liv.
